The Philadelphia Phillies boosted their MLB-leading total to eight All-Stars on Saturday with the addition of left-hander Cristopher Sanchez to the Midsummer Classic.
Sanchez will make his first All-Star Game appearance as the replacement for veteran left-hander Chris Sale, who is slated to start for the Atlanta Braves against the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
Saturday’s move comes on the heels of Seattle Mariners reliever Andres Munoz (15 saves) replacing his teammate, fellow right-hander Logan Gilbert, on the American League All-Star team’s roster. Gilbert is slated to start Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels.
The All-Star Game is Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas.
Sanchez, 27, is 7-4 with a 2.96 ERA in 18 starts this season. He will see many familiar faces on the NL team, including Phillies pitchers Zack Wheeler, Ranger Saurez, Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm as well as first baseman Bryce Harper, shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm.
Sale, 35, is 12-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 17 starts this season for the Braves.
