After landing Aj Staton-McCray on Tuesday evening via the transfer portal, FAU was quick to get back to work and land another new member.
Leland Walker, a 6’1 G and rising junior formerly of Eastern Kentucky, announced his commitment to FAU on Wednesday night via his personal Twitter.
Checking in as the second leading scorer on the A-Sun regular season champs, he averaged 15.4 PPG, 4.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds this past season, while shooting 43.3 % from the field and 34.2 % from deep.
Walker played mainly on the ball last year, and improved his ability to create his own shot, upping his season averages from 9.4 PPG on 38.7% shooting in his rookie year.
The Indiana Native was first team all A-Sun this past season and had 11 games where he scored 20+ points, showcasing an ability to score both on and off the ball, with the aforementioned preference for the former.
The highest rated recruit in EKU history was a 4 star out of Hargrave Military Academy, and prior to that played at North Central High School where he was recruited by Indiana, DePaul, Providence, and Xavier, among other schools, before eventually committing to EKU and making an immediate impact as a freshman.
Out of high school, he was a 3-star prospect, the 37th overall combo guard, and the 11th best player out of Virginia; as a transfer he remains a 3 star, while being the 26th ranked CG.
John Jakus has debuted an ability to bring highly rated recruits to paradise, with Walker forming a formidable backcourt duo alongside Samford transfer Aj Staton-McCray, with both having the ability to score the ball, and facilitate when needed.
FAU will have a lot of scoring to replace as everyone is well aware of by this point, and the Owls first two transfers of this offseason have the ability to put a dent in that need for points.
The job is far from complete, as FAU MBB hinted on their Twitter with a post that another recruit may be headed to paradise in the near future.
Jakus and Co. are cooking up something in Boca Raton, and it’s time for Owl nation to sit back and enjoy the show.
