Quills Picks Winners – Tuesday 8/27 – Assiniboia Downs Race 6

After the hat trick at Parx yesterday, we head north of the border again as we look at the sixth race on their seven-race card. We have seven horses going a mile and a sixteenth in the Nephite Overnight Stakes that will head to the post around 10:40 pm Eastern time.

Assiniboia Downs Race 6 – Nephrite Overnight Stakes

Favored in tonight’s feature race is the 5 Blazing Bo (9/5 morning line). He has run better as the races that he was entered got longer. He has won three in a row here, having won the Manitoba Mile most recently 22 days ago at Assiniboia Downs. He had some traffic trouble in the stretch as the leader came out and a horse on the outside drifted in, but he still had enough momentum to win last time out.

The 1 Exacting (4/1 ML) is running in his third race in 22 days having raced in an optional claiming race on August 14 where he was disqualified for bumping another horse in the stretch. He was pressured from gate to wire and held on, but the a bump deep stretch after exchanging the bumps the entire stretch was probably enough to warrant the DQ.

If Exacting has company on the front end tonight, it could be from the 4 Glava (6/1). He comes in from Century Mile in Edmonton after winning an allowance optional claiming race three weeks ago. He does tend to fade here, so it is possible that Exacting could win this battle but may lose the overall war of this race.

The 7 Big Nick (7/2 ML) was the horse on the outside in the Manitoba Mile three weeks ago. He appears to be a horse that wants to be near the lead, but he might be a horse that doesn’t have that closing kick.

The 6 Magic Tiger (5/1 ML) finished fourth in the Manitoba Mile bouncing back from a troubled trip in the previous race. He should continue the upward trend here and possibly be a surprise winner.

The 3 Deanos Cape won two weeks ago at tonight’s distance and despite the 20/1 odds, he could have a great chance at upsetting everyone here. He was near the pace and drew off to win by almost four lengths. He has won four times this year, and this war horse will be looking for his 15th career win in his 80th race.

The key to this race is who goes with the 1 Exacting. I think the Century Mile shipper Glava will go with him, which will allow the closers to rush to the front as they turn for home. I am swinging for the fences here and going with Deanos Cape in an upset.

Let’s call this race 3-5-7-6 and my play is $20 to win on the three. Best of luck everyone!
