Spring training roundup: Angels beat Dodgers, old friend Shohei Ohtani

Superstar Shohei Ohtani was held in check against his former team, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts as the Los Angeles Angels blanked the host Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 on Tuesday night in Glendale, Ariz.

Nolan Schanuel hit a two-run triple and Jo Adell added an RBI double for the Angels. Chase Silseth (2-0) surrendered three hits across 2 1/3 innings for the win. He had two of the 12 strikeouts recorded by Angels pitching.

The Dodgers were held to seven hits, two of which came from Jason Heyward. Daniel Hudson (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing Miguel Sano to open the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth.

Ohtani left the Angels to sign a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers in December.

Red Sox 7, Rays 4

Enmanuel Valdez finished a home run short of the cycle as host Boston beat Tampa Bay in Fort Myers, Fla.

Valdez hit an RBI single to open the scoring in the second inning, followed by an RBI triple in the third and an RBI double in the fifth. Tyler O’Neill added a two-run home run, an RBI double and three runs for Boston.

Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock (2-0) struck out two and yielded two runs on four hits over three innings. Jose Caballero went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs for the Rays. Ryan Pepiot (0-1) was shelled for six runs on eight hits while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Pirates 6, Blue Jays 5

Liover Peguero’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth pushed host Pittsburgh past Toronto in Bradenton, Fla.

Oneil Cruz and Tsung-Che Cheng each hit solo homers to help the Pirates rally from a 3-0 hole. John Flowers (1-0) needed to record only one out to pick up the win.

Will Robertson hit an RBI double and Miguel Hiraldo had an RBI single in the top of the eighth to put the Blue Jays back up 5-3 before Hayden Juenger (0-1) blew the save on Peguero’s homer.

Mets 5, Yankees 4

Tylor Megill pitched three hitless innings with six strikeouts to propel the host Mets past the Yankees in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor and Brett Baty had RBIs before Francisco Alvarez and Baty scored on Yankees pitcher Harrison Cohen’s fielding error to build a 5-0 lead in the third inning.

Yerry De Los Santos (0-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits over two-thirds of an inning. The Yankees’ comeback fell short after Jeter Downs’ RBI double, Trent Grisham’s two-run single and Kevin Smith’s run-scoring single.

Orioles 3, Phillies 2

Albert Suarez fanned seven over three scoreless innings as visiting Baltimore edged Philadelphia in Clearwater, Fla.

The Orioles’ Diego Castillo drove in a crucial insurance run in the top of the ninth, as Pedro Martinez plated a run for the Phillies on an infield single in the bottom half.

Reliever Andrew Suarez (1-0) pitched a perfect fifth.

Jake Cave went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Phillies. Luis Ortiz (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up a run on two hits in the sixth.

Braves 3, Tigers 0

Phillip Evans had two RBIs on a sacrifice fly and a single as host Atlanta blanked Detroit in North Port, Fla.

After Braves starter Spencer Strider finished four innings with four hits, four strikeouts and one walk, Charlie Morton (1-0) made his spring debut in relief and fanned three with two hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings.

Six Tigers players mustered one hit apiece. Starter Reese Olson pitched three scoreless innings with two hits and four strikeouts before Joey Wentz (1-1) gave up the game’s first run in the sixth.

Marlins 2, Astros 0

Trevor Rogers and four relievers combined to help Miami three-hit host Houston in Palm Beach, Fla.

Rogers pitched the first two innings before Ryan Weathers fanned four with one hit and one walk over the next four frames. George Soriano (1-0) struck out two and earned the victory after Jonah Bride hit a solo homer to left.

Reliever Misael Tamarez (1-1) went two innings for the Astros and yielded one run on one hit, one walk and two strikeouts. Jose Abreu and Corey Julks hit doubles.

Cardinals 5, Twins 4

Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer and an RBI sac fly as host St. Louis held off Minnesota in Jupiter, Fla.

Miles Mikolas (1-0) struck out four over four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) and three hits. Dylan Carlson’s two-run double made it 5-1 Cardinals in the third before the Twins made a push.

Jose Miranda hit two RBI singles for the Twins after Alex Kirilloff led the game off with a homer. Starter Chris Paddack (0-1) yielded three runs on three hits and a walk while fanning two over 2 2/3 innings.

Giants 13, Brewers 8

Wade Meckler racked up four RBIs on three singles as host San Francisco scored 11 straight runs en route to a win over Milwaukee in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Michael Conforto had three walks and an RBI double, while Wilmer Flores went 2-for-2 with an RBI double for the Giants. Tanner Kierst (1-0) cleaned up the final two-thirds of the fourth inning for starter Logan Webb, who put the Giants in a 5-0 hole on seven hits despite striking out six.

Rhys Hoskins and Wes Clarke homered for the Brewers, as eight different players had an RBI. Devin Williams (0-1) took over in the fourth inning and was touched up for four runs while recording just one out.

Diamondbacks 5, Padres 3

Eugenio Suarez had a three-run home run to lift host Arizona over San Diego in Scottsdale.

Suarez also scored the first run of the game on a Padres fielding error before raking his shot to left center off Pedro Avila (1-2) in the third inning. D-backs starter Ryne Nelson (3-0) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in three innings, striking out two.

Tyler Wade hit a two-run single for the Padres and was joined by Jose Azocar, Graham Pauley and Brett Sullivan with two hits apiece. Sullivan hit an RBI double in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough after Avila gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Guardians 4, Mariners 1

Ramon Laureano hit the go-ahead solo home run as Cleveland downed visiting Seattle in Goodyear, Ariz.

Laureano’s shot to center field off Kirby Snead (0-1) came in the fourth inning, before Will Brennan hit a two-run single in the fifth for insurance. Emmanuel Clase (1-0) pitched a scoreless, hitless inning of relief for the Guardians.

Jorge Polanco (2-for-2) hit an RBI double to get the Mariners on the board first. Snead allowed one run on one hit and one walk over 1 2/3 relief innings.

Rangers 10, Mariners 9

Evan Carter drove in five runs on a pair of dingers before Davis Wendzel hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth as visiting Texas beat Seattle’s split squad in Peoria, Ariz.

Carter led off the game with a home run before adding a grand slam in the second that made it 6-2 Rangers. After the Mariners rallied for leads of 7-6 and 9-7, Texas took the lead for good, making a winner out of Jose Corniell (1-0), who pitched two scoreless innings of relief with three hits and three strikeouts.

Mitch Haniger homered in the third and Mitch Garver smacked a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth for the Mariners. Brett de Geus (0-1) was responsible for two runs on three hits in the ninth inning.

Royals 4, Cubs 0

Tyler Gentry blasted a three-run homer and host Kansas City gave up just four hits in a win over Chicago at Surprise, Ariz.

Five Royals pitchers combined on the shutout, with starter Brady Singer (1-0) tossing three innings of one-hit ball. He struck out three. Alec Marsh, Kansas City’s second reliever, also allowed just one hit across three innings, fanning four.

The Cubs had only three chances to plate runners in scoring position, coming up short each time.
